CCA Middle School Oratory Competition Rules

Competition Date: February 7, 2025  CCA HS Performing Arts Center

Time: 1:00-3:00 p.m.

  1. Presenters will memorize and recite one of the following excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, with the addition of their own writing/thoughts based on the excerpt they choose. The memorized portion may be shared at any time in their speech. Notes may not be used during the competition and the total length of the speech should not be less than 2 minutes, not to exceed 3 minutes. Sign up here if you want to participate.
  2.  Judges will evaluate each speech/presenter on poise, eye contact, posture/gestures, voice/volume, and effect of message. Competition Rubric can be viewed here.  Each presenter will receive a copy of their rubrics/scores at the completion of the competition. 
  3. There will be four district winners.
  • One 6th grade winner
  • One 7th grade winner
  • One 8th grade winner
  • Overall MS winner
  1. Building Competitions (Week of Jan. 20th) - Students will sign up to participate in the Oratory competition.  Each student that wants to participate will present their speech to the judges.  The top 10 students based on the rubric will move on to the final competition.
  2. Winners will be determined by the total number of points received on the rubric by all judges.  A “tie-breaker” judge will be assigned prior to the beginning of the competition.  The “tie-breaker” judge will remain anonymous and will decide the winner(s) in the case of tie. A cumulative form will be used to record points and will only be seen by the judges and the person verifying the scores. 
  3. The intent of this academic competition is to have fun in a positive atmosphere, while practicing thinking and speaking skills.  Support and encouragement to all competitors is expected. 
  4.  Competitions will be held at each individual building to identify the students that will move to the district level competition.
